As aespa continues to build momentum with its second full-length album LEMONADE, the group has heightened anticipation through the prerelease single “WDA (Whole Different Animal).” Fellow SM Entertainment girl group Hearts2Hearts has also announced the release of Lemon Tang, drawing interest from K-pop fans over the similar citrus motif appearing across the company’s girl-group lineup.

While SM Entertainment has not officially presented the releases as part of a shared storyline, the timing and imagery have become a new point of discussion among fans. In contrast to SM’s well-known “Pink Blood” identity, the repeated lemon-related titles offer a fresh and playful layer of interpretation within the company’s broader creative branding.
aespa, released “WDA (Whole Different Animal)” as a prerelease track from its second full-length album LEMONADE. The song has further raised expectations for the group’s comeback, supported by strong international chart performance and a visually distinctive music video.
Following its release on May 11, “WDA (Whole Different Animal)” entered the Top 10 of the iTunes Top Songs chart in 17 regions, including Thailand, Portugal, Vietnam, Singapore, Chile, Brazil, Indonesia, the Philippines, Laos, Malaysia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Armenia, Oman, Ukraine, Cambodia and Peru.

The track also earned QQ Music’s Gold Album certification, which is awarded when sales exceed 250,000 yuan. In addition, it ranked No. 1 on QQ Music’s digital album sales chart in the single category, its overall and Korean music video charts, and Tencent Music Entertainment’s integrated K-pop chart across five affiliated music platforms, underscoring aespa’s global presence.
The music video for “WDA (Whole Different Animal)” expands aespa’s established universe with experimental direction and striking visuals. Set in an era where it has become increasingly difficult to prove what is “real,” the video portrays aespa breaking through confusion and conflict to reaffirm its own existence.
Key scenes, including a bus collision and collapsing clones, visually intensify the anxiety of an age in which familiar images are endlessly copied, consumed and reproduced. By blurring the line between original and copy, reality and virtuality, the video naturally leads viewers to question what can still be considered real.
This approach aligns closely with aespa’s long-running narrative. Since debut, the group has built its identity around the concept of ae-aespa, a virtual counterpart that coexists with the members’ real-world selves. In that sense, “WDA” does not simply use artificial or digital imagery as a visual device. Instead, it connects aespa’s established worldview to the current technological environment, where questions around identity, replication and authenticity have become increasingly relevant.

Together, aespa’s LEMONADE and Hearts2Hearts’ Lemon Tang add a noticeable citrus tone to SM Entertainment’s summer releases. Whether viewed as coincidence, seasonal branding or a fan-driven point of interpretation, the lemon motif has become an unexpected talking point in this summer’s K-pop conversation.
